First and foremost let me say sorry for the lack of updates on the ol’ Brawl front. There has been A LOT going on since I last discussed the game. King Dedede, Captain Olimar, leaks, rumors, delays, etc. etc. Well I’ll try to be more consistent now, or at least discuss things that I feel are worth discussing. Today an update came that’s worth discussing. Nintendo, well specifically HAL Labs, ruined a possibly amazing level. More after the jump…
Today Brawl had two updates. The first one that you’ll see is for a new level, the Mushroomy Kingdom. I honestly didn’t even realize the “y” in the name until I copied the URL for that link. Wow. Mushroomy Kingdom..really? Ugh. Well I guess it leads perfectly into the level itself, which is nothing short of a travesty.

The Mushroomy Kingdom is obviously a Mario level (the name says it all) and that’s obviously something to be happy about, right? Wrong. It’s a recreation of World 1-1 from the original Mario Bros. It scrolls to the right and sometimes the level will randomly take you to World 1-2, cool huh? Eh not so much. You see HAL decided it would be wise to turn the Mushroom Kingdom in a vast wasteland. It’s all in ruins. The beautiful colors that popped out at you everytime you jumped into World 1-1 are gone. It’s dust. It’s essentially just another desert level (honestly I expect to see the cactus). What prompted Nintendo to do this is beyond me. Is there something in Super Mario Galaxy that hints at the Mushroom Kingdom being destroyed, and given a pointless “y” at the end of it’s name?
Now I’d love to end the post here and say this is all the bad news I have, but nope. Just like George Lucas**, HAL and Nintendo decide to go back and tamper with more perfection. They changed the original Mario theme music! Dubya Tee Eff?! Is it even legal for them to do this? Seriously, is it? I’m sure there is some law out there that says you can’t mess with perfection like that.
Now since it’s been a while since I’ve posted a Brawl update you might think I hate this game, but on the contrary. I love this game! Everything about it has made me screech like the fanboy that I am. I grew up with Nintendo, and the original Mario. Hell to this day Super Mario Bros. 3 is my favorite game! So Brawl has just constantly appeased me and now this seems like a slump for what could have been amazing. Nintendo had an amazing level on it’s hands (I loved the Mario adventure level in Melee) and it simply “ruined” it. I’m sure I’ll play it and enjoy it, but it could have been a level that fans loved like the Hyrule Temple in Melee (and now Brawl because of the fan love). We’ll just see what happens when the game is released, hopefully on March 9th.
**Han shot first.
