In what has been a dramatic turn of events, the New York Mets have lost 7 games on the Phillies in ten days, now in a tie for first place after the Mets lost and Phillies won.
The Mets, after getting swept by the Washington Nationals, lost a make up game to the St.Louis Cardinals, where they were shut out by Joel Pineiro and a crew of replacement hitters with no business in an MLB lineup, and of course Albert Pujols. The Phillies scored 4 runs off the Atlanta Braves before John Smoltz could even record an out, putting the Phillies on track for another victory.
The Mets and Phillies are now tied for first place of the National Leauge East, but after winning their last 8 matchups, the Phillies have the tiebreaker. The Mets are also behind the San Diego Padres in the Wild Card.
Pedro Martinez put forth seven strong innings, but the Mets could not get a lick of offense going. They looked dead, emotionless, and quite frankly, they looked done. Jose Reyes wasn’t jumping around, dancing, and high fiving everyone. Lo Duca wasn’t fired up, Pedro wasn’t goofy and energetic, and it looks like they’re just ready to go home and end the misery.
The Mets will end the regular season with a three game series against the Florida Marlins, who they won three out of four games against in their games last week. Oliver Perez, who pitched eight fantastic innings in his last start, will try to stop the bleeding for the Amazins-ly horribles on Friday night, with the struggling John Maine schedule to take the mount on Saturday. Tom Glavine will face Dontrelle Willis in the regular season finale. The Phillies will face the Washington Nationals, who gave the Mets enormous trouble.
